Polyethylene Body Armor

For years, the United States military has used polyethylene body armor for protection of their troops. Since World War II, the United States military has provided polyethylene vests and armor for use on their soldiers. This is largely due to the fact that the material is able to withstand high pressures and is resistant to tear. In addition, the material is incredibly lightweight and compact. This allows military members to use the vest for much more than protection; it can also be used as a fashion accessory for everyday wear.

There are two primary uses of polyethylene body armor; protective uses and non Protective uses. The primary protective use of the material comes from the physical strength it offers against bullets and other projectiles. Polyethylene is typically used in bullet vests and soft armor plates. It is able to withstand high pressures and is very sturdy. PE (polyethylene) is a strong thermoplastic polymer.

An alternative to polyethylene is stainless steel body armor. While polyethylene is most often used for bulletproof vests, stainless steel is also effective for stopping handguns. Because of its weight, it is typically used as an insulated lining. This provides little protection against piercing rounds, but provides much more reliable protection against most common handgun ammunition. Its weight also prevents the material from bouncing away from impact, much like a bumper on a car.

Polyethylene is a flexible material, which means that it can be imprinted with designs to provide specific amounts of protection. Two of the most common forms of protection are a hard, rigid core and a hard, brittle outer jacket. Hard, rigid core bulletproof vests feature a steel jacket, while bulletproof ceramic plates feature a thin circular steel plate. Each of these options is effective against a range of handguns. With modern manufacturing techniques, manufacturers have also been able to make coatings for firearms to resist cutting and puncturing.

While polyethylene is primarily used as a bulletproof vest material, it is also used as a soft body armor. These options are less effective against handguns because they are not thick enough to absorb a large amount of force. For this reason, they are mostly used to stop more moderate caliber handgun rounds. They are, however, effective against other type of handguns such as stopping high velocity rounds. Their low density makes them easy to tear.

Polyethylene is flexible, lightweight, and extremely durable. Its unique properties allow it to be printed onto a wide variety of protective vest materials including leather, carbon fiber, and Kevlar. In addition, it can also be coated with other coatings that give it different functional qualities. Ceramic based coatings for firearms are particularly popular due to their low cost, high durability, and ease of cleaning and maintaining. Although polyethylene armor plates are largely used for defense purposes, they are also used in a variety of industrial applications.
